A Community-Driven Effort to Put Malaysia on the World FPV Stage
In October 2023, Malaysia’s FPV drone racing scene hit a historic milestone—for the first time ever, a national FPV drone racing team represented the country at the World Drone Racing Championship (WDRC) in China. This incredible journey was made possible through pure community support, with Underground.KL stepping up to self-sponsor five talented pilots to compete on the global stage.
Selection Through the First Spring Global Qualifier
The journey began earlier in the year, during the first Spring Global Qualifier, where Malaysia’s fastest and most promising pilots earned their spots on the national team. Instead of waiting for external funding, the FPV community came together, pooling resources to ensure that Malaysia would have a presence at the world championship. It was a true testament to the passion and dedication of our local FPV scene.
An Unforgettable Learning Experience
Competing at WDRC 2023 was an eye-opening experience. Facing off against the world’s best FPV pilots, our national team gained invaluable insights into international race formats, technical setups, and high-level competition strategies. Interacting with other contingents provided inspiration and motivation to push the boundaries of our skills and race management techniques.
Highlight Moment: Arisya Becomes a Top 10 Female FPV Pilot
One of the standout moments of the competition was Arisya’s incredible achievement—our youngest female FPV pilot finished as a Top 10 Female Pilot in the World! Her dedication and skill on the track proved that Malaysia has the talent to compete at the highest levels. Her journey is an inspiration for aspiring young FPV pilots, especially for women looking to break into the sport.
Looking Ahead to Next Year
The success of this first-ever national team has ignited excitement for the future. The lessons learned from WDRC 2023 will shape how Malaysia prepares for future international competitions. With the continued support of the Underground.KL community, race organizers, and pilots, we aim to send an even stronger team next year.
This journey wasn’t just about racing—it was about proving that passion, determination, and community support can take FPV drone racing to new heights.
🚀 Malaysia’s FPV future is bright, and we can’t wait for what’s next!
